A visit to Design Museum London

Today, 17th February some of us design students visited the Design Museum in London.

I really have an interest to see how other designers work and compare them to how I see it in my vision.

We all gathered around outside the museum at around 1.45pm and decided to take one hour and 45 minutes to go explore around the museum. On this blog I will be sharing some pictures of the museum that really caught my eye and the things I learned.

This picture made me question so WHAT IS 'GOOD' DESIGN?

In my mind a good design is something that should fulfill its purpose yet be unique.

It was interesting to see what defines a good design.

'Designer ~ Maker ~ User'

It was really fascinating to see the way they used three work to describe the process of design and it was displayed in a unique way.

Designer - was based on the phrase by Ernesto Rogers an Italian architect. 'From the spoon city'.

From the spoon to the city - it explores ways of a designers thought process and notifies projects in every scale from the smallest to the largest.

Marker - this sections exhibits traces of the manufacturing evolution, From 3D Printing, robotic arms, Model T Ford cars and everyday objects too such as tennis balls as well as other designs such as the London 2012 Olympic Torch are presented in different stages of production process.

It was striking to realise and think how every single object goes through a variety of process to manufacture and most of us only get to see the product itself but never understand where it came from? who thought of this? why was it made the way it is?

User - this display explores interaction between people and brands have changed throughout the years and how it is now in the modern world.

Landmark pieces from Sony, the Apple iPhone and even Olivetti Valentine typewriter.

All this demonstrating how communicating has changed from past to now.

Really liked these design definition displays at parts of the museum, got me thinking about design in different perspectives!

This was another thing that caught my attention! but why? I really don't know the right answer but was a very vibrant piece standing tall and you see it as soon as you turn to this side of the wall. whats really interesting was the words went from harsh to kind. This display made me think we all have our own mind voices and take a lot on negativity into our mind, which then makes us disbelieve in our own selves but maybe when someone reads this I hope they realise its only our mind voice that plays with emotions and feelings , I believe that what we think is what we become. No matter what we all have the ability to set our mind to a certain point and work with it.

Same goes in the design process, what we imagine in our mind can be made into real designs as long as we don't look take other opinions or our mind voice thinking- 'Is this a good design? Am i thinking stupid? Is it impossible to make?. I have learnt we can be as creative as we want, as successful as we want to be... but it all takes a right mind set to believe in yourself and go for it!.

And Finally lets not forget about the Architecture of this building. One word 'mind blowing', as soon as I walked in I looked up and realise how oddly shaped yet beautifully designed to and makes you appreciate how unique odd designs can be and still make a statement without thinking why is it so weird?. Overall the visit to the museum was a great experience and was useful to explore and learn more about the design process.
